DIRECTOR'S NOTE:
This time of year always brings feelings of nostalgia and tradition and so it always feels like a perfect time to open our students' eyes to the great musical theater composers of the past. Musical theater is considered one of the few original art-forms created here in America. Groundbreaking shows in the early 20th Century like Showboat, Porgy and Bess, and Oklahoma were tied to the American experience and combined acting, singing, and then dance in new ways.

These five composers whose work we're performing today were part of this new wave of storytelling. Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein's musicals like The Sound of Music and Cinderella are still works we sit and watch as a family. Jule Styne's song "Don't Rain On My Parade" didn't just kick-start Barbra Streisand's career: it still fuels the hearts of little divas everywhere; and our opening number by George Gershwin was a megahit when it was written almost 100 years ago. And then, the final portion of our showcase is in dedication to the Godfather of Musical Theater himself, Stephen Sondheim, who passed away last year at the age of 91. He's considered to be the greatest musical theater composer of all time and was inspired by the rest of the names previously mentioned. He worked on Gypsy and West Side Story (which always vie for greatest musical of all time) at the age of 27, and then moved onto his own 16 (!) full length musicals. And it all started when, as a teen, he became friends with his neighbor, Hammerstein himself, who became a mentor and encourager of Sondheim's talents and artistic visions.

And that's what we strive to do here at Annie's Playhouse: boosting the skills and character and confidence of every student that spends time with us, seeing their potential and helping them grow in their passions for performing. Thank you for spending time with us today and enjoy our showcase featuring our awesomely talented and unique students at the Playhouse. We couldn't be prouder of all their hard work this semester and always...  Here's to making new memories together and to always keeping everything musical and bright!

All the best,
Mr. Steven
